Millesgården is a gift from the artist couple Olga and Carl Milles to the people of Sweden. A historic site where young and old, art historians and novices alike, can experience and be moved by art. Millesgården is meant to be a place of beauty—but also of reflection. To fulfill this vision, we must preserve and develop Millesgården’s unique environment in the best way possible. We have therefore established The Millesgården Park Fund to ensure the long-term survival of the sculpture park and to develop it into a modern visitor destination, open and accessible to all.
Time and increasing climate stress mean that the park’s buildings, sculptures, and fountains will require extensive care in the years to come—something that cannot be covered by our regular budget. Additionally, the garden is under threat from everything from Dutch elm disease to insect infestations. Living materials bring unexpected costs, which is why we see it as crucial to build up a financial buffer.
To ensure Carl and Olga Milles’s gift truly benefits all of Sweden (or at least everyone who wishes to visit), the sculpture park must be safe and accessible to everyone. Currently, that is not the case. People with strollers or wheelchairs can only move through the park with great difficulty. To transform Millesgården into a modern visitor facility, we need to find solutions to navigate between the many terraces and staircases. Safety must be improved—handrails and uneven stone paving must be addressed, all sculptures need securing, and all fountains must be sealed.
In short, there is an urgent need to secure the future of the art at Millesgården. We are therefore establishing the Millesgården Park Fund. To safeguard the sculpture park’s future, our goal is to raise SEK 30 million in capital by the end of 2023. This amount will go entirely toward the care and maintenance of the park, its buildings, sculptures, fountains, and gardens. It would also provide essential seed funding for the safety and accessibility improvements necessary to make Millesgården a modern, inclusive destination. We appeal to individuals, companies, and foundations to help ensure that Millesgården’s sculpture park is preserved and developed for future generations.
